British Sign Language Stage 1 (Basic)
The aim of the BSL Stage 1 course is to encourage people to acquire the ability to communicate with deaf people and to learn about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Hold a basic conversation with a deaf person using BSL
Sign a short passage
Answer questions on a short story given by a deaf person
Provide information about deaf people, the deaf community and deaf culture
Recognise variations in the way deaf people communicate
Minimum of 60 hours teaching / contact time. At the end of the course, an examiner will come from CACDP to carry out ten minute assessments.
The British Sign Language courses offered at DCDP lead to certification by the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP)
