We have a team of Senior BSL Tutors who are developing and planning our next NVQ Level 3 BSL course, (commenced September 2002).
A structured teaching programme. We will be using the old stage 3 CACDP syllabus, together with the new NVQ3 material as it is released. For each subject area there will be a visiting deaf person to discuss, for example, Education, Employment, Social Life.
Work related signs and jargon will be delivered by visiting instructors. Subject areas may include:
Computing, Maths, Councelling, Engineering, Sport.
Each term, there will be a social event where invited deaf people will develop your skills in informal gatherings.
Each subject unit will prepare you for the NVQ criteria.
You will have ample practice at reception and production.
You will need contact with deaf people outside the sessions. It is hoped that people will be able to achieve this or be willing to undertake voluntary placements. The Volunteer Co-ordinator may be able to help with this.
The tutor team will help you to build up your portfolio of evidence. The structure of the course will be:
30 weeks @ 2 hour-class sessions
3 weeks @ 3 hours - social interaction groups
3 weeks @ 2 hours - portfolio building sessions
You will need to keep a log of your contact and work with deaf people.
This course is for people who have already acquired the CACDP certificate in BSL Stage 2 and wish to work either in paid employment or voluntarily with deaf people using their preferred mode of communication in sign language.
The qualification is gained on the successful completion of 2 modules. Assessments are done on a one-to-one basis, with a portfolio of evidence (paper and video based) required to demonstrate competence in all the stated objectives.
Derby College for Deaf People encourages students to have an initial assessment after which a programme of study will be developed for the individual. DCDP's extensive facilities will be used to support the programme.
