COURSE:
EDEXCEL Professional Development Award Communication Support Worker for Deaf People

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
It is now an essential entry requirement to have passed CACDP BSL Stage 2 before you start the course. Students are also expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent.

The award is equivalent to NVQ Level 3.

LENGTH OF THE COURSE:
This course is offered as a one year part-time course and is based at Derby College for Deaf People. 6 hours each week plus 100 work placement.

Deaf people and the Community:
The Deaf Experience
Human development and behaviour
Structural influence
Language and Communication:
Introduction to language and linguistics
Acquisition of spoken language
Communication systems used by Deaf people
Information Technology and Deaf People.
Support Strategies:
Practical Communication Support
Direct Support
Indirect Support
Communication Skills and Professional Practice:
Practical professional application
CACDP Deafblind awareness
CACDP Communication with Deafblind people, level 3
CACDP Note-taking (Students require 5 GCSEs to be registered for this, we advise you undertake the training even if you do not qualify for the certificate)

COMMENTS:
The course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career as communication support workers with deaf people in education or training.

The qualification is becoming one of the essentials for work in this area. Edexcel is likely to introduce external assessment to this qualification.
