Starting at Derby College for Deaf People means that you are now over 16 and you would like to have more control over your own life.

Here at Derby College for Deaf People we will help you to improve your life skills and so be able to cope with life after college.

Self Sufficiency

One of the most important experiences of going to college is learning to look after yourself. Managing your own time and money and making decisions for yourself are difficult lessons to learn.

At DCPD we expect our students to improve these skills and to eventually cope on there own. We have experienced staff on hand to help when necessary. The staff are all activily involved in helping students to help themselves. This can be through personal development or as a representative on one of the student bodies.

Two students are elected by fellow students to sit on the governing body of the college.

Weekends

Students who stay at weekends have a large number of options open to them. The College has a well equiped sports hall and a Student Club. The students can choose to go into Derby or travel free to Sheffield or Nottingham. The Peak District is only a short bus ride away.

Residential Support

For a lot of our students it will be the first time away from home. It is important for them to feel happy and secure with their living situation.

All the students are assessed to decide which type of residential support is required. Those students who need a lot of help will live in a house with more staff. The other students (usually 2nd and 3rd year students will live in a house where they have more control over their lives.
